OTTAWA | The canadian authorities of health are investigating an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened nearly sixty people in five provinces this summer.
“On July 24, 2020, with 59 confirmed cases of Salmonella Newport linked to this outbreak have been identified in the following provinces: British Columbia (23), Alberta (31), Manitoba (3) Ontario (1), and Île-du-Prince-Édouard (1)”, indicated on Friday the public health Agency of Canada. “The people became ill between mid-June and mid-July, 2020.”
The Agency indicated that data are available for 28 of the 59 persons, and that, of this number, six were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
The public health Agency of Canada said it is working on this issue in collaboration with its provincial partners, public health, the canadian Agency of food inspection and Health Canada. The investigators canadians are also working in collaboration with their vis-à-vis the United States, where an outbreak of Salmonella Newport with a dna fingerprint similar has been observed.
“For the moment, the source of the outbreak has not been determined,” said the public health authority of canada, adding that “the outbreak is ongoing, because the disease’s recent continue to be reported.”
People become sick when they eat foods contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria that can be found in poultry, beef, milk, or eggs.
The public health Agency of Canada recommends to the public “to wash hands frequently and use safe practices in food handling to prevent salmonella”. She advises among other things to cook food to a safe temperature, the internal has been checked using a digital thermometer”.
The symptoms of an infection from salmonella, called salmonellosis, include fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
“The majority of people who fall ill following a salmonellosis will recover fully after a few days,” said the Agency.
