The name of the "scouts" will be announced this Monday, January 15 at the end of the morning by the Games Organizing Committee (Cojop). In Montpellier, the details of the route are finally revealed.
It is this Monday, January 15, that the Organizing Committee for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games must reveal the names of the bearers of the flame which will stop on May 13 in Montpellier. There will be 11,000 of them in France and around a hundred to share this exceptional moment in the city. The jury made up of around 300 people decided between the candidates based on several criteria. In addition to the diversity of profiles (men, women, disabilities, etc.), “the scouts must carry within themselves at least one of the three energies of Paris 2024: the energy of sport and of the Games, the energy of the collective, the energy of the territories which undertake and make France shine."
In Montpellier, we already know that we will find essential athletes such as Kevin Mayer. Jeanne Rossarie, experienced weightlifter, teacher at Staps and manager of the Hérault club with the most licensees, will be there. honor of carrying the Flame in a collective relay with his students. "What pride for our club! As captain, I emphasize the strength and unity of our team. For these students who are passionate about weightlifting, living the Olympic spirit is the supreme reward for their daily investment. All ready to represent the values of sport!" We will also find leaders of sports associations, committed volunteers, athletes with disabilities… proposed by the official partners ( Caisse d'Epargne, Banque populaire, Coca Cola) and communities. The Métropole de Montpellier sent its short list to the Organizing Committee to highlight personalities from its choice. Seven will be selected. Millau will have one candidate, Sète two.
A highlight at the Philippidès stadium
If their name will only be revealed at the end of the morning, we know more about the route that the Olympic flame should take. Lit on April 16 in Olympia in Greece, it will stop in Athens before boarding the Belem heading to Marseille where she will arrive on May 8. Three towns will be crossed before disembarking on May 13 in Millau then in Sète in Hérault and Montpellier. "The flame will arrive from Sète to Montpellier via Juvignac at the beginning of the afternoon", reveals Christian Assaf. Without giving all the details, the elected official in charge of sports in the metropolis explains that a highlight will be organized at the Philippidès stadium – the flame will run the 400 m – then will cross the shield before completing its course near the banks of the Lez, Place de l'Europe. A cauldron will be installed under the Arc de Triomphe to maintain the flame since Montpellier is a stopover town.
The route still needs to be refined but one thing is certain: it will be punctuated with festivities to fuel the fervor before the official opening of the 2024 Olympic Games on July 26 in Paris.
