Work of Diana Markosyan called “Cubanite”

International competition for photojournalists World Press Photo announced their winners. Among others, the jury found one of the best the Russians Diana Markosyan called “Cubanita”. This work won first place in the category of “Problems”, reported on the website of the award.

The picture shows 15-year-old girl named Pura. She rides her car in a pink dress by one of the districts of Havana, and the residents are preparing to celebrate her birthday. Quinceañera in Latin culture — a special holiday which symbolizes the transformation of girl to woman.

But the main prize of the photo contest was won by American photographer John Moore, who took the photo, the U.S. border guards searched a woman from Honduras in front of her little daughter. Both were trying to sneak into the country as part of the “caravan of migrants”.

Diana Markosian was born in Russia but raised in California (USA). According to the jury, her works are conceptual and documentary in nature. Markosyan has published in many prestigious publications, including National Geographic Magazine, The New Yorker and The New York Times.
