Sales of plant-based drinks are growing rapidly and there are more and more choices. This new school year, those offered in individual format are very practical for the lunch box. Focus on the best choices!

OUR ANALYSIS 

Twelve choices of vegetable drinks in individual formats made the object of our analysis. 

  • From 60 to 160 calories
  • From 2.5 to 5 g of lipids, including 0 to 1 g of saturated fat
  • 1 to 17 g of sugars
  • 2 to 26 g of carbohydrates
  • From 1 to 7 g of protein
  • From 15 to 210 mg of sodium
  • From 0 to 2 g of fiber
  • From 0 to 0.2 g of omega-3
  • 250 to 300 mg of calcium (about 19 to 25% of the daily value)
  • 1.5 to 8 mcg of vitamin D (about 8-40% of the daily value)  

Note: Plant-based soy beverages are the closest to milk in terms of protein content. They become good nutritional complements to meals or an interesting snack.

THE BEST CHOICES 

Organic fortified soy beverage unsweetened from Natur-a
Each 200 ml serving (1 container) provides 60 calories, 3 g of fat, 1 g of sugars and 7 g of protein. It is the product with the lowest sugar content and the highest protein content of the test bench. The list of ingredients is simple, with no added sugars and is enriched with vitamins and minerals (eg calcium, vitamin D), which makes this product a good plant-based substitute for animal milk. It's the champion of our test bed!

Earth's Own Original Unsweetened Fortified Oat Beverage
Each 250 ml serving (1 container) provides 130 calories, 5 g of fat, 6 g of sugars and 4 g of protein. This product is among the lower-sugar options on the test bench and has a slightly above-average amount of protein. The ingredient list is simple, with no added sugars and enriched with vitamins and minerals. Earth's Own Unsweetened Vanilla Fortified Oat Beverage offers similar nutritional values. As a bonus, both beverages are a source of dietary fibre. 

The original fortified organic soy beverage from Natur-a
Each 200ml serving (1 container) provides 70 calories, 3g fat, 5g sugars and 5g protein. Even if the product contains added sugars, the quantity is lower than the average of the products analyzed and the protein content higher. The list of ingredients is similar to that of the previous product, but with the presence of organic cane sugar in third position.  

THE WORST CHOICE

Silk's Dark Chocolate Almond Plant Based Drink
Each 236 ml serving (1 container) provides 2.5 g of fat, 17 g of sugars, 1 g of protein and 210 mg of sodium. It is the product with the highest sugar content and the saltiest in the test bench. This drink provides only 1 g of protein. The ingredient list is simple and is fortified with vitamins and minerals, but has cane sugar in second place. Silk's Vanilla Almond Plant-Based Drinkoffers similar nutritional values ​​with slightly less sugar (15g) and sodium (170mg). br>Each 200 ml serving (1 container) provides 90 calories, 16 g of sugars and 1 g of protein. This product is among the highest-sugar and lowest-protein options on the test bed. The ingredient list is simple and fortified with vitamins and minerals, but contains added sugar. Each 200 ml serving (1 container) provides 140 calories, 16 g of sugars and 6 g of protein. It is one of the products richest in sugars. However, the protein content is higher than the average of the products analyzed. The ingredient list is simple and enriched with vitamins and minerals, but contains cane sugar among the first ingredients.
