Puerto Rico victory: Edwin Diaz gets injured while celebrating and will miss the whole season

The Puerto Rico baseball team pulled off quite the feat of defeating the mighty Dominican Republic at the World Classic on Wednesday, but the celebrations quickly turned sour. 

Pitcher Edwin Diaz passed Teoscar Hernandez in the mitt to make the final out of a 5-2 victory. York, however, collapsed, clutching his right leg. Unable to put any weight on it, the star player was wheeled off the field using a wheelchair. In tears, he waved to the crowd before heading to the locker room.

The following day, the Mets revealed that the principal concerned will have to undergo surgery to treat a torn tendon in his knee . According to ESPN, he will miss the entire 2023 season.

Diaz is one of the highest-paid relievers in the major leagues, having agreed to a record five-year, $102 million contract in November. The two-time All-Star Gamer recorded 32 saves last season.
