Quebecers regain their good mood

Les Québécois retrouvent leur bonne humeur

After reaching the bottom of the barrel in terms of mood in April, Quebecers have taken the bull by the beast in the month of may. A good mood, which coincides with the gradual end of the confinement, and the arrival of the warm weather.

There is no need to say, the beginning of the containment has thrown a cold shower on Quebec in the month of march, according to the analysis of the index of mood in Quebec of the firm Lightweight.

Then we headed toward the third month, the happiest since the creation of the index in 2018 69.6 (100), the measures of the government Legault, have reduced the index to 65.

The rate was never lowered too quickly in the past.

At the end of the roll

Then, in April, the bad mood has reached its peak with an index of 64.7, the lowest ever recorded by the firm.

“The crisis, and especially the containment, has a major impact in the state of mind of the people. Our data show that there is a sense of insecurity greater, as the serenity is disturbed, and that the feeling of freedom is less strong, ” says Pierre Côté, the creator of the index mood and the happiness index of the firm Lightweight.

The pressure, however, has started to fall in may, while the government Legault began phase 1 of the déconfinement gradual of the province. Therefore, the index rose by 2.3 points.

“People are starting to have more hope, they are preparing for an eventual return to normal, and, of course, it is good for morale,” says one who is also the director of research at Light.

According to Mr. Côté, the pandemic COVID-19 is now closely linked with the behavior of the population.

The next decisions that will be taken with respect to the crisis will thus have a considerable impact in the evolution of the mood of the people in the months to come.

Evolution during the crisis

Average index : 67,1 (from December 2018)

  • January : 66,0
  • February : 67,0
  • March : 69,6 —> 65,0
  • April : 64,7
  • May : 67,0

How the index mood is calculated ?

Leger allows Quebecers to self-assess their mood on a scale of 1 to 10, while replying to a short questionnaire. Six factors that have an impact on the daily life are observed : sleep, diet, temperature, displacement, civility and the new. This analysis reflects the results for 70 298 respondents between November 2018 and may 2020.

Two scenarios

To a rise in historical

Although the crisis has had a significant negative impact on the state of mind of the people, it will be possible to realize the fragility of their gains.

This awareness should allow the mood of the population, making a leap impressive in the coming months.

“We realize that we can lose quickly the things that we considered as acquired. We will be more happy with what you have, ” says Pierre Côté.

Besides, the summer is another significant factor to the good mood of Quebecers. As it happens with the founder of the index mood is believed that the record of 70.1, which was established in July 2019, could soon be beaten.

A 2e wave devastating

The other hand, there is the possibility of a second wave of spread of the COVID-19.

It would be an event that would cause unprecedented damage on the well-being of individuals.

The fact of being confined again after having tasted a little more freedom, create a fall record of the index, the mood in the short term, argues Mr. Côté.

“It is more fragile. If it goes down, and that it introduces new measures, I am convinced that the figures will fall to a degree never equalled to this day. There, it will do poorly at all levels. ”

Seniors more serene

A very clear trend stands out when looking at the data gathered by the firm Leger : the closer the retirement age approaches, the more one is happy.

At 18 years of age, and up to 65 years, there is a growth is an almost constant mood of respondents from 61.5 to 71.8.

Note that the least 18 years of age, however, pose a moral higher by almost two points (to 63.1) than in young adults.

The social pressures, and professional and financial that come with adulthood could be important factors to explain this trend.

The firm also assumes that the recklessness of youth and that of pensioners could positively influence their way of seeing life.

“It is sad. It is as if what it offers them as a society do not like “, suggests the founder of the index mood, Stone Side, which invites reflection on this topic.

Average index according to the age

  • Least 18 years of age : 63,1
  • 18 to 24 years old : 61,5
  • 24-to-34 age : 65,1
  • 35 to 44 years : 64,6
  • 45 to 54 years : 66,8
  • 55 to 64 years : 70,1
  • 65 years and more : 71,8

At the top in the summer

Obviously, in Quebec, the summer is synonymous with good mood, and this, no matter the age, the gender or the occupation of the respondents.

In 2019, the months of July and August had the rating, with an index of mood of each of 70.4 and 70.1.

It is, however, in the month of may as the students are at their peak, in terms of mood. A situation that coincides with the end of classes for many.

Note that the month of march is also awaited eagerly by the people of Quebec.

If we exclude that of 2020, where the containment has begun, undermining the morale of the people at the same time, it presents a better rate (69,4) that the month of June (68,3).

The week of spring break could be involved in this phenomenon.

Conversely, the morale is at its lowest in mid-winter, in November and in January.

Once again, this time unanimously, while we observe an average of the mood of 65.7 during these two months.

Index means, according to the season (2019)

  • July : 70,4
  • August : 70,1
  • March : 69,4
  • June : 68,3
  • May : 68,2
  • October : 68,1
  • September : 67,7
  • December : 67,2
  • February : 67,1
  • April : 66,1
  • January : 65,7
  • November : 65,7

A divergence according to the occupancy

Without surprise, the end of the week is the time when the general population is happier. However, the daily mood seems to be strongly influenced by the occupation of each.

Among the students, the morale is highest on Saturday (65,2), followed closely by Thursday (65,0) and Wednesday (is 64.6).

Among the workers, the Saturday and the Sunday, have the rating (67,5), followed once again by the Wednesday (66,8).

Finally, the retirees seem to be more joyful on Wednesday, (72,2), Sunday (71,8), and Tuesday (71,6).

Leger was difficulty to find an explanation about the mood rather high on Wednesday.

It assumes that there is an influence psychological positive of the fact that half the week has passed.

In contrast, the Friday and the Monday are the days where the population in general is more subdued with a hint of mood 65.9.
