Record of heavy traffic on the roads

Record de poids lourds en circulation sur les routes

Quebec has recorded 163 000 heavy trucks in circulation in the territory last year, a record which has accelerated the deterioration of road infrastructure. At the same time, there has been a historic fall of offences for overloading.

This is an increase of more than 5,000 trucks compared to the previous year, according to data from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.

For the past five years, their number has even exploded with 20 000 heavy vehicles on roads.

Several factors explain this trend, as the economic growth in recent years and deliveries for online purchases.

“Trucking is the barometer perfect for the economy,” says Marc Cadieux, president and ceo of the Quebec trucking Association. “Everywhere, the truck is involved in respect of the consumption. “

However, the increase in truck traffic has the consequence of break down prematurely, the infrastructure of the road network, explains the engineer Mario Fafard, especially when they do not comply with the weight limitation.

“For a trucker, which is paid, it is to put the maximum “loads,” he says.

Fewer violations

Surprisingly, even if one notes an increase in heavy vehicles on our roads, there has been a sharp decline in the number of offences for overloading.

They went from 5800 in 2015 to less than 4,000 in 2019.

The president of the Fraternité des constables of the traffic control Quebec, Éric Labonté, note that Quebec has a little adjusted the shot since the reports in the Journal, last summer, on the road in the rout.

But Québec continues to ask the agents to be tolerant with the truck drivers. “Sometimes, it gives a warning and fair notice of non-compliance. No offense, it does not fit into the statistics. There is a tolerance, and it is hard on the roads, ” said Mr. Labonté.

The transport companies would be more consistent with the standards, according to Claude Pigeon, executive director of operations support to the vice-president of the SAAQ, which is responsible for traffic control.

“In 2010, 7 % of the vehicles that I interceptais were in overload. Since then, compliance has improved because this is 3.8% of the trucks that I intercepts today which are overloaded, ” he says.

It ensures that there are more interventions than before, thanks to targeted approaches of inspectors.

“We are very equipped to control expenses,” said M, Pigeon. “It may be that there are more trucks on the roads because there are more compliance on workloads. “
