Red onions of the United States: cases of salmonellosis in Quebec

People in Quebec have been affected by salmonella because of red onions imported from the United States, according to the public health Agency of Canada Sunday.

The federal agency stated on Sunday that six new cases have been registered since Thursday across the country, including in Quebec, without, however, specifying the exact number in the province.

The Agency had sounded the alarm on Thursday, but no cases had been reported in Quebec, because the outbreak was mainly developed in the West.

“There are now 120 confirmed cases in Canada. Investigators have determined that the red onions may have been contaminated from the company Thomson International of Bakersfield [California], in the United States,” said the Agency news on Sunday.

Because of the risk of cross-contamination, the company has also recalled all varieties of onion that have been in contact with red onions. Onions, white, yellow and sweet yellow have therefore been removed from the shelves.

This outbreak is not about the onions grown in Canada.

Salmonellosis is a disease all in all are safe for the majority of the population, but it can cause severe complications in children, pregnant women, the elderly and people who have a weak immune system.

The usual symptoms are nausea, diarrhea, chills, fever, or abdominal cramps.
