Because feria does not only rhyme with fiesta, each year, a major security system is deployed to ensure the smooth running of the bullfighting festival.
The Nîmes feria, a famous bullfighting festival, attracts a huge and festive crowd every year. However, this influx requires security that meets expectations. On average, "around 400 law enforcement officers are mobilized each day of the event to ensure the smooth running of the festivities."
"I am calm"
This year, despite the redeployment of certain Nîmes personnel for preparations for the Paris Olympic Games, the security system remains robust. Jérôme Bonet, prefect of Gard, assures us: "We have a team largely equivalent to that of last year."< /em> Far from coming to play the fife, to meet the various security forces in action, this Friday, May 17, he was optimistic and reassuring: "The objective is to ensure and allow people to party. I am calm."
Starting tomorrow, Saturday May 18, three mobile force units will be deployed. One unit will be active during the day to manage possible demonstrations, another in the evening and a final one will intervene late Sunday evening. "We are in an event that will attract more than a million people", recalls the one who was just a few months ago central director of the judicial police.

"If’there is a message to convey, it’s to choose your driver wisely." The prefect of Gard also insisted on the importance of road safety, stressing that an important control system has been put in place around the ancient city. Another subject at the heart of the debates, that of attacks against women. "We need to be able to provide support for victims on these items. It’is important", he added.
After a first evening "calm" and attendance in line with expectations for a first Thursday of the feria, the authorities hope that the rest of the festivities will take place in the same serene and secure atmosphere.
