“Responsibilities” of France in the genocide in Rwanda: Emmanuel Macron persists and signs

The Head of State confirmed his remarks from 2021. He then recognized the "responsibilities" of France in the tragedy that occurred thirty years ago.

On May 27, 2021, during a trip to Kigali, Emmanuel Macron said "recognize" the "responsibilities" of France in the genocide which caused nearly ;rsquo;one million deaths among the Tutsi minority, thirty years ago.

"Infernal behind closed doors"

Acts perpetrated between April 7 and July 17, 1994 by the Hutu extremist power. In his 2021 statement, Emmanuel Macron denied the fact that Paris could have been "accomplice" of the Hutu government.

"We have all abandoned hundreds of thousands of victims to this infernal closed door"  however, also launched the French president in Kigali, thus working towards a rapprochement with President Paul Kagame, after years of tension between the two countries.

"Rwanda has been completely humiliated"

And while the commemorations of the thirtieth anniversary of this tragedy began this Sunday in this small Central African country, in a video broadcast on this occasion, the Head of State persisted and signed: "France assumes everything and exactly that in the terms that I used" (in 2021, therefore), a- He confirmed. Adding that he had "no word to add, no word to take away from what I told you that day".

This Sunday, Paul Kagame deplored that the international community "has let us all down", thirty years ago years. "Our journey has been long and difficult. Rwanda was completely humiliated by the scale of our loss"  he said, with seriousness.

Post-traumatic shock

According to figures from the Rwandan Ministry of Health, cited this Sunday by the daily Aujourd’hui en France, thirty years later the facts, up to 25% of the country's population still suffer from a form of post-traumatic shock linked in one way or another to the genocide.

Invited to the commemorations of this thirtieth anniversary of the genocide in Kigali, Emmanuel Macron is represented on site by his Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Séjourné and the Secretary of State for the Sea Hervé Berville, who is himself born in Rwanda.
