Restaurateurs relieved, the keepers of the bars in anger

Les restaurateurs soulagés, les tenanciers de bars en colère

The restaurant owners were relieved to learn that they will soon welcome customers into their establishments. For their part, the owners of the bar are angry.

As early as 15 June, the sector of the restoration to the outside of the greater Montreal area will be able to resume its activities. It will have to wait for June 22 to the restaurants of greater Montreal, Joliette and The Epiphany could reopen.

The measures will be very strict for the 22,000 permit holders of restoration, they will need to prioritize the terraces. Inside, not more than ten persons per table, clients must be 2 metres away, or separated by a partition wall.

Servers and cooks required to wear a mask and a visor, if they can’t respect the distance. They are asked to present the menus on blackboards or screens on the walls in order to limit the exchange of objects with the clients.

The restorers will be able to sell alcohol without the requirement to serve meals so that the bars will remain closed. The owners are disappointed to see that the rules have changed.

“We will not be able to compete at these restaurants-there. You must wait until you have a date in a week, two weeks or three weeks later. We find really that there is a great injustice,” says Renaud Poulin, of the Corporation of the owners of bars, brasseries and taverns in Quebec.

The director-general of the bar the 2 Pierrots, an institution in Montreal, don’t even know if he will be able to reopen his establishment.

“After 46 years, it is necessary to ask the question. The deadlines are enormous, and the sums begin to be important”, said Jean-Marc Lavoie.
