Soixante-dix collégiens et lycéens se sont rassemblés lors de la seconde édition du concours département de robotique, au lycée Émile-Peytavin, à Mende, mardi 11 juin 2024.

The second edition of the departmental robotics competition took place on Tuesday June 11, 2024, at the Émile-Peytavin high school, in Mende. Seventy students gathered. Among them, high school seniors, but also middle school students from the Haut-Gévaudan establishment in Saint-Chély-d’Apcher and Marthe-Dupeyon in Langogne. "The students had to, in groups, build sumo robots so that they could compete today in an arena called dohyo&quot ;, explained Sébastien Azzola, engineering science teacher. The winner is the device that takes its opponent out of the defined zone.

From construction to combat

To get there, for several months these student volunteers worked on their robot from A to Z. "We carried out the programming, the wiring, the choice of materials…", listed Eva, Louna and Célia, from Haut-Gévaudan college.

The morning of the competition, the participants appeared in front of a jury to support their project. They had to explain their approach, their research, their choice of algorithm but also the materials and the number of sensors. "The mark they obtained in the defense accounts largely for the final ranking, supported Sébastien Azzola. Even more than the results during clashes."

Bob, the big winner 2024

Bob, robot by POC, Goustafi del Bolidé and many others fought. In just a few seconds, the matches were over. Everyone had their own technique for programming. Louna's group opted for the robot to spin around and flee when it sees its opponent. While the robot by POC also had to turn on itself while heading towards its competitor. "But apparently that didn’not work too much", laugh Eva and Célia, whose group arrived second to last.

Bob, the device made by Raphaël C., Anatole, Zakaria, Andréas and Raphaël L., from Marthe-Dupeyron college, is the big winner of this season 2. "L&amp ;rsquo;Last year, a group from our establishment came third. This year, we wanted to do better, says Andréas even before the fights were over. It’s a done deal: they obtain first place on the podium.

Introducing the engineering profession

For some, this initiative allowed them to support their choice of orientation. This is the case for Andréas: "I already wanted to move towards engineering sciences. There, I tell myself that this could be an idea for the future, and therefore go to STI2D (Sciences and technologies of industry and sustainable development, NLDR).&quot ; Others, like Louna, Eva and Célia, don't really want to continue in this sector because it's too much complicated".
