Dominating in 2021, the Université Laval Rouge et Or defense wants to pick up where it left off and continue to progress.
Coordinator's unit Marc Fortier will rely on experienced athletes to achieve this.
“We have a lot of returning players. The basics are established and we can take it to another level,” he said on Monday, five days before his team’s first game in 2022.
Among the defensive pillars of the Rouge et Or, there are many veterans like linemen Yanis Chihat, Alexis Pelchat-Foley and Jean-William Rouleau. Linebacker Alec Poirier, as well as defensive backs Maxym Lavallée and Thomas Landry, will also be important elements.
Last year, the Old Capital club allowed only 108 points, the lowest total for a team in the Quebec league. Fortier, however, doesn't want to focus too much on the numbers.
“I don't pay too much attention to those things and I don't cling to them. We are talking more about process. The primary objective is always to win.”
We can understand Fortier's thinking, considering that the Rouge et Or still lost three games in the regular season last year (a first since 1998).
A league of quarterbacks
The defensive genius of the formation and its players are also well aware that they will have their hands full in 2022, since the RSEQ has never counted on so much talent in the quarterbacks. Jonathan Sénécal (Carabins), Olivier Roy (Stingers) and Anthony Robichaud (Vert & Or) have proven themselves, while Éloa Latendresse-Regimbald (Redbirds) is full of promise.
“We will not hide that there are very good attacks in our circuit, dropped Fortier. Including ours, there are five excellent number 1 quarterbacks currently in Quebec. We will have good challenges every week.”
“It's really a great challenge, added Landry about the quarterbacks. We play football for that, challenges. We'll gladly take them.”
The 23-year-old defensive back also discussed the pressure that comes with wearing the Université Laval colors.
“We know that we have a good group and our expectations are high. We put pressure on ourselves and we are able to cope with the music,” he expressed with confidence.
“When you choose to play for the Rouge et Or, you commit to living with that,” added the Elans de Garneau product.
– The first challenge for the Rouge et Or will be Robichaud and his Vert & Sherbrooke gold. The Estrie team will be at Laval University's PEPS on Saturday evening.
