In the history of Palekh miniatures played a significant role revolution. Until 1917, Palekh was a tradition of icon painting. Subsequently, the craftsmen had to retrain: the former icon-painters established the Palekh art decoration artel, where they began to experiment with technique honed by centuries of tempera painting. So there Palekh lacquer miniature scenes painted on dark background with use of gold. Usually, they were decorated boxes of papier-mache. A new fishery soon appreciated abroad during the world exhibition in Paris in 1925.
Among the admirers of this craft was Maxim Gorky. It was he who promoted the creation of the State Museum of Palekh art. Today it has a large collection of lacquer miniatures and Palekh icons.
