Russian folk crafts: Khokhloma
The art of Khokhloma painting was born in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

According to one legend, Khokhloma came up with the old believers of the Volga forests. They painted icons in a special way: put tin powder and linseed oil, and after firing, the background was gold. Then the icon was covered with floral pattern similar to the Khokhloma. The first mention of this fishery refer to the XVII century. And the official birthplace of Khokhloma believe the city Semenov – the capital of a wooden spoon.
“It all started with a spoon. Its doing here more than 500 years – says Valery Healthy, Deputy Director of the enterprise “Fishing”. – In the tree rubbed linseed oil and then dried in a kiln for strength. It turned out a Golden color – that’s why Khokhloma and called the Golden. Then products painted flowers, leaves and berries.”
To learn more about the Khokhloma in the Museum and tourist center “Golden Khokhloma”, where exhibits of XIX–XX centuries. It is also possible to paint the spoon, a doll or a plank on a master class. Excursions to the enterprise are the factory “Khokhloma painting” and “Fishing” (recorded, 2-3 days).
