Sabotage of the TGV network: a mysterious email of claim supports the ultra-left lead

An e-mail of claim sent this Saturday adds to the elements that investigators have been studying since the arson of SNCF installations on Friday. Traffic is gradually returning to normal.

The ultra-left could be at the origin of the malicious acts which led to massive disruptions on the rails for thousands of travelers on Friday, the day the trains opened. Olympic Games in Paris and the start of the traditional summer crossover.

The investigation accelerated this Saturday with an email claiming responsibility, sent using a secure domain name usually used by the ultra-left and reaching various media outlets. Sent from the address “sabotagetgvjo@riseup.net” and signed by an anonymous collective that presents itself as "an unknown delegation", this email has the following subject: "Claim for sabotage of TGV lines a few hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games".

"They call it a party ?"

The beginning of the text, revealed in particular by our colleagues at La Provence, reflects the motivations of the signatories. “They call it a party”? We see it as a celebration of nationalism, a gigantic staging of the subjugation of populations by states,” the email begins. The text attacks, among other things, “the experimental field for police crowd management” that the Olympic Games would constitute, but also the activities abroad of large French companies or the nuclear industry.

The investigators will carefully study this message of claim that they must nevertheless still authenticate, while continuing the investigations that have mobilized more than 50 investigators from the gendarmerie since Friday. "We have recovered a certain number of elements which allow us to believe that we will know fairly quickly who is responsible for what clearly did not sabotage the Olympic Games, but who sabotaged part of the French holidays", assured Saturday the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

Cameras, telephony…

Samples taken from the four burned cabinets – using gasoline – at strategic railway junctions for train circulation, were sent to experts from the Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie (IRCGN) for urgent analysis. Images from surveillance cameras, in fairly large perimeters, are studied, as are the telephones which are limited to each sector. Sources close to the investigation told Franceinfo that the sabotage was the work "of very well-informed authors" and “coordinates”, which would also support the ultra-left lead. Before receiving this email, the authorities did not, however, rule out the possibility of foreign interference.

On the rails…

On the rails, rail traffic is gradually improving. “SNCF Réseau agents worked all night in difficult conditions in the rain to allow an improvement in TGV traffic on the routes affected by the acts of sabotage“, SNCF said in the morning. On the LGV Est, traffic has resumed normally; on the North, Brittany and South-West routes, an average of 7 out of 10 trains ran during the day with delays of one to two hours. Traffic will remain disrupted this Sunday on the North route and should improve on the Atlantic route. CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou promises a return to normal this Monday.
