Individuals who have managed to infiltrate mailboxes of businesses to then defraud the companies of several hundreds of thousands of dollars were affected by a major police operation on Tuesday on the north crown of Montreal.
Four searches were underway in the late morning on three residences of Laval, as well as a trade Rosemere.
According to the authorities, several people may be involved in the scam have been arrested.
“More specifically, between may 12 and June 4, 2020, the suspects managed to infiltrate in-boxes e-mail merchants and diverting payments through fraudulent messages, to new accounts,” said the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in a press release.
“We encourage traders to verify and strengthen the need of their computer security system and to agree to more of a verification with their customers, ideally verbally, when it comes to making a change of account, or a bank transfer for a payment,” added the SQ.
The operation was conducted by investigators of the major crimes of the SQ, in collaboration with the police de Mascouche and Terrebonne.
