Social security: are long-term conditions covered at 100% in danger ? What the government has in store for them

Les ALD sont prises en charge à 100 %. MAXPPP – Mourad ALLILI

ALD, or long-term (long-term) conditions, are in the government's sights. Reimbursing costs linked to these pathologies is expensive and he plans to reduce the list of eligible illnesses.

Soon the end of systematic reimbursements for certain serious pathologies ? Long-term illnesses are giving a hard time to the government which would like, to replenish the social security funds, to revise downwards the number of illnesses benefiting from this comprehensive care.

13 million patients in France

In France, 13 million people suffer from long-term conditions, says the Ministry of Health cited by France Info. Long-term conditions are serious illnesses, lasting more than 6 months and requiring expensive treatment, explains Health Insurance on its site.

These are serious pathologies, more or less disabling, curable or not. From diabetes to certain rare diseases including the disabling after-effects of stroke, multiple sclerosis or cancer, dozens of illnesses are specially treated.

Health costs linked to these diseases, when patients are declared on ALD, are covered 100% by Health Insurance. This also allows them to benefit from ;sick leave of more than 6 months and transport costs (under certain conditions).

Towards a reduction in the list of diseases concerned?

ALDs represent 65% of Health Insurance expenditure. The Deputy Minister in charge of Health Frédéric Valletoux assured that the government will not "touch long-term conditions" but was going to think about the illnesses involved.

He would like to make sure that it is "relevant" for each ALD that is mentioned on this list. "It’is about opening a discussion with patient associations, doctors, in a relaxed manner", assures him delegate minister quoted by Var Matin.

"We will not touch ALD in the sense that those who need to be supported in their pathology will continue to be supported by the’ rsquo;Health insurance. There is no question of taking a swipe at what is at the heart of our social pact." This list, established around forty years ago, brings together around thirty conditions.< /p>
