Spring in Cyprus: pros, cons, pitfalls
The beautiful sea spreads to the legs, and a delicate slice of moussaka just begging to be eaten. Together with tour operator TUI has prepared a memo for those who are going to Cyprus in the most romantic season.
What for the weather?
20 degrees Celsius by day, at night about 10. It’s by the sea. In the heart of the island, the Troodos mountains, still snow and kantuta skiers.
Sometimes raining, and on the coast blows pretty fresh wind. The sea is not particularly warm (17 degrees) – but to swim and sunbathe on a lovely day, no one will stop you. In General, the bottoms take it. As for the rest of the wardrobe, you will not hurt windbreaker-raincoat, light jacket and/or warm jacket.
But what to do?
Walk! The island is in full bloom: against the backdrop of lush, greenery – bright yellow and red spots – whole fields of yellow and red colors. Contrast and fragrance add trees: acacia blooms yellow, almond – pale pink and orange – snow-white.
Want to add more colors – have a look to the salt lakes of Larnaca on the South coast: in early spring even have a chance to catch the magnificent flocks of flamingos that arrive here for wintering.
Worth a visit with tours reserves: for example, under Rizoelia Larnaca (here you can admire the pine trees – the namesakes of the Islands). If the weather is not a walk in the local museums there is always something to see! For example, the antique treasures in the Cyprus Museum (he was in the capital, Nicosia), or vintage cars in the building next door (that’s really what you’d expect to see in Cyprus)!
There are important dates?
March 11 – first day of lent on Green Monday (we called it “Clean”). In Russia just ended the festivities – Mardi Gras has died down, and the Cypriots go on a picnic: there are seafood, fresh vegetables, fruit and halva from sesame seed. Why not follow their example?
March 25 – Greek Independence Day: 198 years ago, the country rebelled against the authority of the Ottoman Sultan. This date is revered on Cyprus – or, rather, in its southern half (the Northern, recall that since 1974, controlled by the Turks).
What for the weather?
In the afternoon around 23°C, at midnight – 14. Local cool for tourists from the North – grace. Fashion still dictates the temperature of the air: day in the trend of sandals and shorts in the evening – Yes, jeans sneakers. If you plan to live in the hotel, please note that the house was warm blankets: the weather is still changeable.
What to do?
For swimming it is better to choose small towns, like Governor’s beach (Governor’s Beach) on the South, with picturesque white cliffs, or Coral Bay (Coral Bay) in the West – is generally one of the most popular beaches in all of Cyprus and the suitable spot for snorkeling.
To diversify the rest can be fun. For example, to the ancient churches and mosaics in Paphos, or to the monastery of Kykkos, which houses the revered Shrine of the island – the icon of the Mother of God, written, according to tradition, the Apostle Luke. Note that there is a monastery in the mountains at an altitude of 1140 m: if you plan a pilgrimage with your children, choose not the hottest and muggy day.
Breathe easier at the beautiful waterfall Millomeris – there is a 15-meter column of water falls from the rocks and broken in the dust and splashes. Frame here – an absolute must-have, especially for the summer, the waterfall dries up. Well, if you want romance, Love Bridge – graceful miraculous arch, which was carved out of the sea in the South-East of Cyprus.
Meanwhile, season fruits, vegetables and berries is gaining momentum – may strawberries have finished, do not yawn!
There are important dates?
April 1 at the island celebrates another independence day, this time from the United Kingdom. Its name can be translated as “the day of the beginning of the national liberation struggle against the British colonialists”. On this day in 1955, Cyprus launched a rebellion against the British government, now a national holiday.
April 28 – main date in the Orthodox calendar: Easter. The cry “Christos Anesti!” the answer is “Alithos Anesti!” and don’t forget two things:
– first, the Catholic Diaspora celebrates Easter a week earlier – not okonfuzilos,
– secondly, at this time the offices and shops are almost certainly closed (and get, for example, gas or camping equipment during and immediately after Easter can be a difficult task).
Weather – a miracle:
+28°C during the day and almost +20°C at night: summer is around the corner! By the end of may is already starting to bake so that newly arrived tourists the climate may seem too hot. The season of strawberries and other berries ends, but apricots, nectarines, peaches, and grapes at your service.
From now until autumn clothing style is resort-casual, but still do not forget about dress code in monasteries and churches: long sleeves and pants for men, skirts and shawls for women.
What to do?
Safely swim and sunbathe, not forgetting the sun cream! After all, the closer to summer, the less desire to leave the shadow or give up conditioning. For morning or evening promenade suitable urban embankments – such as Larnaca and Paphos.
Long trips in the heat can cost a lot of sweat – but still once you see the Akamas nature reserve. There are several routes – the path of Aphrodite, the path of the Adonis or circular – Smiles.
Extremely handsome and the forest of Paphos in the Troodos mountains (rocks, serpentines, ancient arched bridges are all included). There is another reason to go to this region – it is famous for wine (which is the one village Pachna).
For relaxation and nice beaches; for example, Lara beach is the place where they lay eggs sea turtles. And certainly take a trip on the South coast! It is here from the foam of the sea was that which the Romans called Venus and the Greeks Aphrodite; here is the perfect place for a photo shoot in the spirit of Botticelli! By the way, Aphrodite: be prepared for the fact that the Cypriot resorts to bare Breasts allowed.
May 1 – familiar to every Russian labor day: the same parade and manifestos, only with the national colors and slogans in Greek.
Back in may, organize a Festival of colors – will, for example, in Limassol – do not miss the fragrant procession with bouquets.
What to try?
In addition to seasonal fruits and berries? Cheese! Local pride – grilled halloumi from sheep’s and goat’s milk. Equally delicious are his relatives – kefalotyri and familiar to Russians feta.
Feta is good in itself, and hot dishes. For example , garides withagemaki – shrimp baked with cheese. In General, the seafood in Cyprus is just a poem: and stuffed calamari, and scallops (on the shell which, incidentally, is the goddess Aphrodite), and stew-stifado octopus. The perfect addition will be a glass of local wine – any waiter will tell you what brand should I order for lunch or dinner.
Yet, of course, is to enjoy mezze and hot – a casserole of eggplant, minced meat and cream – juicy meat moussaka or the lamb kleftiko. Tahini, that is sesame, halva is a wonderful treat and the perfect souvenir: not spoiled. As, incidentally, and other classic marinated olives, olive oil, spices and drinks.
Why wait until a personal acquaintance with Cyprus? Especially if our guides will be the professionals of TUI Russia. In the portfolio of tour operator – excursions, and many, many tours (as spring and summer!) on all resorts of Cyprus. Choose and book your trip on the website of the operator.
