Before getting to the topic, here is a reminder. In the Last of The Jedi, Rey (Daisy Ridley) went to meet Luke (Mark Hamill) that it takes to become a Jedi. On the island, she has discovered a special bond with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) that allows him to communicate with him while being in two different places. The latter would kill the Supreme Leader Snoke and proposed to Rey to reign at his sides, which she refused. At the end of the film, the Resistance managed to escape thanks to Rey and Luke would die after having thrown his body during a fight in the face of his nephew on the planet were screaming.
The trailer for Star Wars 9 : The Ascent of Skywalker
The action of The Ascent of Skywalker begins some time later (the exact duration is not specified). Rey and members of the Resistance have found a refuge, and a young apprentice Jedi trying to develop his powers. For its part, Kylo Ren, now Supreme Leader, is going to make a discovery that will change everything…
A scenario very (very) loaded
There is a lot going on in Star Wars 9. Really a lot. A bit like if J. J. Abrams had decided to make 2 films or a trilogy – in one. During the release of Star Wars 8, the two camps clashed : those who loved (moment of confession : one part of it) and others who have criticized the choice of the director, Rian Johnson. In The Ascent of Skywalker, it is very clear that J. J. Abrams (who also staged The awakening of the Force) is part of those who have not necessarily appreciated the work of his predecessor.
This passes through a turn of 360° about the origins of Rey (not to say no more, it is promised) but also making surprising about the secondary characters. Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), for example, in the center of the 8th film, is relegated to second or even third plan in this new pane. A pity when one remembers how the actress has suffered because of the “fans”.
Attention, we have not said that there was bad in Star Wars 9, far away. We appreciate in particular the fact that J. J. Abrams has decided to reunite the “band” (Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca and C-3PO) for a quest that brings them from planet to planet (at least in the beginning). Yes, the final battle is epic. We mentirait if we told you that we expected all of the twists that we could see. They are just not necessarily those that we had hoped for.
Epic battles and humor
Like any episode of Star Wars who meets, The Ascent of Skywalker takes full the eyes with its special effects and its epic battles. The confrontation between Rey and Kylo Ren, teasé of a sudden band-ads, is visually sumptuous, and one understands why Daisy Ridley said that she had really struggled on the shooting. Another good point : the humour. A sense of humor that is not necessarily present throughout the film but that does not hurt !
A movie filled of winks
One thing that you can’t remove The Ascent of Skywalker, it is the nostalgia on which he bet. Yes, the winks of the eye – others will say the fan service – are present as well. In a large number. We forgot to count (well, we were a little busy…) but what is sure is that the fans of the saga will be able to detect many references to the previous parts. Some are more enforced than others.
The last word
Then, what to think of this final film ? As you may have understand if you have arrived until then, there are the good and the less good. If the film is still stunning on lots of aspects, it is also equally frustrating on the other. We emerged with a mixed feeling, almost unfulfilled to some plots/characters. This film concludes the saga of the Skywalker ? Yes. But we already know, the end chosen by J. J. Abrams will not make the unanimity among the fans. But at the same time, can we really satisfy all the world ?
