Researchers from Manchester University conducted experiments on mice.
IVF technology in which egg extracted from the woman’s body and fertilized in vitro, i.e. in vitro. After that begins the stage of cultivation of the embryo within two to five days, then it is transferred back into the woman’s uterus. Over time it is recommended to transfer no more than four embryos to avoid multiple pregnancy. However, the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and birth with IVF is roughly the same as with natural conception: pregnant on average a third of women.
The researchers decided to test how the placement of embryos under stress conditions during in vitro fertilization can affect their further fixing to the wall of the uterus and development. The scientists made the embryos experience stress repeatedly removing it from the solution and placing them back, which eventually led to easy dehydration and, as a consequence, reduction of volume. After that, the embryos placed in the uterus of the laboratory mouse, where tracked, what percentage of them take root. In the end, the probability of failure decreased by 70%.
It should be noted that the researchers used only one method of creating stressful conditions and did not try to, for example, to expose the embryos exposed to high or low temperatures. The researchers emphasize that despite the fact that the results were surprising and interesting, to test the experiment on a human embryo while it’s impractical in a clinical setting. However, according to lead author of the study, if scientists can figure out what exactly happens inside these embryos, it may open a new area of research and one day will lead to the improvement of the efficiency of the IVF procedure.
