Student minimum income: what is this new allowance proposed by municipalities, which helps those in need ?

A new aid for students is being offered by more and more municipalities in France, allowing them to continue their studies: the minimum student income (RME).

The minimum student income is an allowance that is increasingly widespread in French municipalities. It helps young people in need to complete their studies.

What is the RME ?

This aid can supplement other allowances, such as scholarships based on social criteria. Each municipality decides on its own criteria for allocation and the amount of aid, since the RMEs depend on the town halls.

Petit-Quevilly, for example, offers up to 100 euros per month for 10 months, depending on the student's resources.

They will have to meet a few conditions, such as being under 25, having a Baccalaureate, living in Petit-Quevilly for at least a year and being enrolled in a higher education course. Students will have to participate to an action for the community at least once a year.

More than ten cities

This system has been set up by more than ten cities in France, such as Genay and Champagne-au-Mont-d'Or in the Rhône or Berre l'Étang in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Other cities offer the same service but under a different name: the municipal student grant.

Thanks for the Info specifies that in 2023, 50% of students had less than 100 euros left to live on and that 49% of them have already had to limit or even give up food purchases
