Tablets or laptops for all high school students

Des tablettes ou portables pour tous les élèves du secondaire

All secondary school students in two centres of school services of Quebec will have access to a tablet or a laptop for the next school year in order to be prepared for any eventuality in the event of a second wave of COVID-19.

At the end of may, Quebec announced a sum of $ 150 million to enable public schools to buy electronic devices in order not to relive the scenario of the last few weeks.

With the extended closure of schools, many students do not have access to a computer or tablet to do their school work at home.

3000 Chromebook

In Quebec city, the centre of academic services of the Discoverers will be the acquisition of nearly 3000 laptops produced by Google.

“With those already available in the institutions and this purchase, all the high school students who do not already have a piece of equipment will have access to a Chromebook. We hope that they will be delivered for the new school year ” indicates the communications adviser Marie Eve Malouin.

A similar scenario is underway in the center for academic services of the First Seigneuries. By 30 June, $ 4.5 million will be spent on the purchase of an iPad or Chromebook.

“It is the availability of the material for each student,” says the secretary-general Martine Chouinard.

Training for teachers is also planned, she says.

At the center of academic services in the Capital, this decision is the responsibility of each institution. “The sums are decentralized in the schools, who make the appropriate choice according to their needs “, says its spokesperson Véronique Gingras.

Same scenario in the Beauce region

On the South Shore, the center for academic services de la Beauce-Etchemin will also conduct a massive purchase of Chromebook that will allow him to provide all of its high school students and adult education students, and to their teachers.

This digital shift will enable greater equity between students and a better awareness of the proper use of technology, it also claims.
