Michel Barnier had set the tone: some French people, “those who can”, will have to make an exceptional contribution to restoring the state's finances by paying a little more tax.

An announcement that raised many questions about the profile of the taxpayers concerned. This Thursday, October 3, Laurent Saint-Martin, Bruno Le Maire's successor at Bercy, provided some details on the set of Télématin.

500,000 euros per year

“We're talking about 0.3% “households”, indicated the Minister of the Economy. “We are talking here about the wealthiest of the wealthiest”. And to illustrate with more precision, he cites a "household without children who earns an income of approximately 500,000 euros per year."

Laurent Saint-Martin again pointed out that this was a temporary increase, without specifying, however, over what period it would last. "I believe that after years of protecting jobs, income and growth, we can legitimately ask the wealthiest taxpayers in this country to participate exceptionally and temporarily to this recovery effort", the minister said.

Darmanin considers Michel Barnier's draft budget “unacceptable”

Former Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on Thursday judged "unacceptable" the draft budget outlined by new Prime Minister Michel Barnier, criticizing tax increases that, according to him, are not accompanied by proposals for structural reforms.

"It is necessary explain what we are going to do with the country”, explained the man who was also Minister of Public Accounts between 2017 and 2020. “I will not vote for a tax increase”, he threatened on franceinfo, reports AFP.
