Teacher beaten in Tourcoing: “I hope it goes well”, student gets a delay before her judgment
|The young girl suspected of having slapped her teacher who asked her to remove her veil in a high school in Tourcoing will finally be tried next December.
The student suspected of having slapped a teacher at her high school in Tourcoing (Nord) on Monday who asked her to remove the veil she had just put on when leaving the Sévigné school, was granted an extension on Wednesday before being judged, and will appear on December 11.
“I am sorry for the blows I gave this teacher and I hope that everything will go well”, declared the young girl, wearing a black jacket over a white T-shirt, her hair in a bun, during the immediate appearance hearing during which she requested and obtained this delay.
“A procedure guided by public opinion”
The 18-year-old high school student, a student of final year of a vocational baccalaureate in hospitality professions, will be tried for violence followed by an ITT of less than eight days and death threats against a person responsible for a public service mission. She was placed under judicial supervision with prohibition on contacting the victim and appearing at her home or near the high school.
The president indicated that the high school student did not contest hitting the teacher but denied the death threats.
The girl's lawyer, Ossama Dahmane, considered at the hearing that her place was not in immediate appearance, stressing that she had no criminal record. He denounced “a procedure guided by public opinion”.
The teacher was not present at the hearing.
“The teaching profession and many other professional bodies are still victims of violence as soon as we want to enforce a rule of law, principles", his lawyer, Eric Cattelin-Denu, lamented to the journalists present.
The classes, suspended on Tuesday, were also cancelled on Wednesday in order to allow "time for discussion and work" for the staff, the rectorate indicated.
"Blows, threats and jostling"
According to initial investigations, the teacher asked the student "to remove her religious veil, before being subjected to insulting remarks", the prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.
The teacher then opposed her leaving the school in order to obtain her identity" and the student then slapped the teacher, who slapped him back, according to the same source.
The teacher filed a complaint. A disciplinary council is also planned.
On Tuesday, the Minister of National Education, Anne Genetet, pointing out an act that defies the“secular school” and “the Republic”, had indicated to the National Assembly that she had requested “very firm disciplinary sanctions” against the student.
A handful of students gathered in front of the high school at midday, including a friend of the girl who described the situation as an'"injustice", believing that putting a veil back on before having completely left the establishment was "usual".
