This piece of history was discovered on August 17, after being shipped from Europe, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said in a statement.
Customs officials collaborated with experts from the Institute of Egyptian Art and Archeology in Memphis to assess the object.
It is believed to be the lid of a canopic, used to contain the internal organs of mummies, which dates from the Egyptian Third Intermediate Period, from 1069 to 653 BC.
This item is protected by the Cultural Property Convention Implementation Act of 1983, which restricts the importation of archaeological materials into the United States.
The artifact has been turned over to Homeland Security Investigation for further examination.
