Tennis: Bianca Andreescu spins into the square

UPDATE DAY

Canada's Bianca Andreescu reached her first semi-final of the season by winning a two-game win over Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, in straight sets 6-0, 7-6(3), Friday at the Thailand Tennis Open.

The Ontarian left absolutely nothing to her opponent who is ranked 60th in the WTA in the first set. Imperial in return, the first seed in Hua Hin won 13 of 18 points while Kostyuk served, breaking three times in the process.

The 20-year-old, however, remained hopeful on the return to the field by standing up to Andreescu. Kostyuk came from a 5-2 deficit to force a tiebreaker. She then scored the first two points of the duel, before seeing the Canadian return to the charge.

In the semi-finals, another Ukrainian, Lesia Tsurenko (136th), will be waiting Saturday the 42nd racket in the world. The veteran caused a little surprise in the previous round by defeating the German Tatjana Maria (63rd) in two identical sets of 6-1.
