Tennis: a job well done by Leylah Fernandez

Montreal's Leylah Annie Fernandez put up a solid performance in the first round of the Charleston tennis tournament on Tuesday, beating Muscovite Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

The 51st player on the women's tour took 1h 14min to defeat the holder of the 330th rank in their very first confrontation.

Fernandez had four breaks in seven chances and conceded his serve once. Although she maintained an efficiency percentage of 43.1% when she held the first serves, she won 63.6% of the rallies disputed on her initial service and 75.9% of those played on her second. In total, the winner got her hands on 61 points against only 40 for her rival.

The task of the athlete from Belle Province will be more difficult in the second round, because she will face the Spaniard Paula Badosa, 12th favorite at this event on clay and 33rd in the world.

Elsewhere in the WTA, Quebecer Eugenie Bouchard will play her second round match at the Bogota tournament against Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, 90th in the world and fourth seed.

For her part, the Canadian Carol Zhao (174th) has an appointment with the Briton Francesca Jones (817th).
