The Anti-Corrida Alliance files a complaint after the broadcast of images of the Beaucaire novillada

“How far can cruelty be exercised in the name of the exception of local tradition ? And where is the limit of stabbing ?" protests Claire Starozinski, president of the Anti-Bullfighting Alliance, who filed a complaint after the novillada in Beaucaire on July 27.

A video filmed in the bullring has set social media ablaze. After three warnings, the young Juan Angel García Corbacho having failed to kill his bull in the allotted time, the animal was stabbed from the back track, without the banderillero managing to kill it. The bull therefore returned alive to the toril where it was finished off.

"Where are the limits ?"

"Even the bullfighting chroniclers said that it was a reprehensible practice", continues Claire Starozinski, who points out that“bullfighting is codified.”That explains the tolerance of the law. The president of the Alliance hopes to obtain a case law, considering that the exception provided for in paragraph 7 of article 521-1 of the Penal Code cannot justify these facts.

In a press release, the association indicates that “in a normal context, the offense of acts of cruelty and serious abuse perpetrated on an animal in captivity is criminally punishable. But they are tolerated in some cities in the South where an uninterrupted local tradition can be invoked."

"In this case, the offence is perfectly characterised but the justifying fact relating to the existence of an uninterrupted local tradition is not applicable."

"The Alliance Anticorrida has therefore filed a complaint with the public prosecutor of Nîmes under Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Six individuals and legal entities are targeted by the said complaint, in particular the municipality of Beaucaire and the organizers."
