For the first time, the value of the production of the audiovisual industry in Quebec has exceeded the milestone of two billion in 2018-2019, has been reported to the Institut de la statistique du Quebec, on Monday.
The increase compared to the previous year was 7% to $ 2,048$ B for this industry which includes the production of tv, cinema, internet, as well as participation in the foreign production and sale of production services.
The film sector has been particularly dynamic, with an increase of 19% in 2018-2019 compared to 2018-2019 to$173 Million.
The one involving the participation of the foreign production and services production growing for the third consecutive year to generate revenues of 839 M$ in 2018-2019, an increase of 18% compared to the previous year.
The independent tv production has, however, taken a different direction with a fall of 9% compared to 2017-2018 for a total of$ 679 Million. The Institut de la statistique du Québec mentions, however, that this level is higher than the average of the last five years.
“The decline of 2018-2019 is attributable to the independent tv production in languages other than French, the value of which goes down after an exceptionally strong increase in 2017-2018. In regards to the production in French, rather, an increase of 4%,” said the Institute, by press release on Monday morning.
The organization has stressed that the crisis of the COVID-19 occurred in the first half of 2020 will certainly have negative impacts on this industry, since many productions have been cancelled or postponed because of the pandemic.
