On the eve of last calls and graduation in all schools of Petrozavodsk received a request from the city administration to stop using balloons and paper lanterns during the school holidays, Interfax reported, citing the press service of the city hall of Petrozavodsk.

“Environmentalists urge not to release balloons and paper lanterns with candles. This has a negative impact on the environment. According to experts, the balloon decomposes at least four years. Colored pieces are lying on the ground and on the surface of water bodies, fall in the stomachs of fish, birds and wild animals”, – stated in the message. To prevent a stock with balloons also recently requested the far Eastern environmentalists. Their call was supported by the Minister of natural resources of Russia Dmitry Kobylkin.

Balloons really pleasing to the eye only a few minute colored dots disappearing in the sky. But the harm they cause to the nature, amounts to a much longer period of time. In the air they hold for long (helium balloons only a few hours), but unable to fly far, and after the fall either into water, where isolated chemicals and poisons to the ecosystem, or habitat of wild animals and even in a protected area where animals and birds can get poisoned, eaten by a latex or entangled in the ribbons that tied up balls. Also, balloons often fall on power lines that can cause a fire.

Since the ban was announced only a few days before the holidays, many schools have already purchased the jewelry and who knows whether it would fulfill the requirements of the authorities.
