A nursing assistant at a residential center for seniors has made it her mission to make residents feel like they they were at home, not in the hospital.
“I know everyone, I give personalized care to each person. I know that such a lady, if I do her nails, she doesn't like red, she prefers pink”, illustrates with passion Sabrina Dorais, nursing assistant at the Center d'hébergement de Tracy.
The 33-year-old woman has been in this profession for ten years, but discovered a whole new world when she arrived in this small accommodation center for 19 residents two years ago.
En Apart from her daily duties as a nurse, Sabrina Dorais does not hesitate to get involved to make the residents feel at home.
She even, on her own initiative and in collaboration with families, given to each person on Valentine's Day in 2021 a cushion with a photo of their loved ones.
“We asked the residents who was in the photos and from there they told us stories that they lived with these people,” she says.
The cushion was then placed on the bed of the residents, a way to personalize their room.
“ For a resident, there was an old photo of her husband who had died several years ago and she slept with it. pillow next to her, as if they were sleeping together, adds Sabrina Dorais.
Devoted colleague
Mrs Dorais's dedication to work does not go unnoticed by her colleagues.
« All the little attentions that she is capable of give, both to the residents and to the staff, she thinks about something all the time, she is always at 150 % “, says nurse clinician Nathalie Gagné.
The beneficiary attendant Michel Abran agrees.
“Sabrina is someone I love to work with, she is caring with the residents, she has a good sense of humor and she is never dramatic with the patients,” he says. .
A stimulating living environment
If Sabrina gives herself so much in her workplace, it is above all because she is convinced of the mission and the benefits of shelters.
” Life goes fast and shelters are such a beautiful place, even if since the pandemic, we can say that it looks sad, the world does not understand”, she laments.
But she is happy to see that many families, initially reluctant to place a close, are now very happy with this decision.
