The CCAS of Béziers activates the heatwave plan for the elderly

As temperatures exceed 30°, the Béziers Communal Social Action Centre (CCAS) has activated the heatwave plan.

With summer temperatures well above the 30° threshold, the Béziers Communal Social Action Centre (CCAS) heatwave plan has been activated for just over a month. Many measures are being implemented.

"We can already be happy to have slightly milder temperatures than in some places in France, smiles Nathalie Clutot, the director of the Béziers CCAS. We are on yellow alert for the moment (this Tuesday, July 30, Editor's note). However, as soon as we saw that temperatures were rising, we directly asked the city hall services to put the usual messages with our contacts on the city's notice boards."

Home monitoring

As every year, the Béziers CCAS has therefore launched the heatwave plan "on June 15". And this year, 46 people are registered on the list of people being followed, 7 more than last year. “We call them two to three times a week, explains Nathalie Clutot. Sometimes, the dedicated agent even goes to the beneficiaries' homes for courtesy visits, he reminds them of preventive measures. During the first visit, he offers a bottle of water and a spray bottle."

But the CCAS of Béziers also follows other residents, around 700, as part of home help. "We have a seniors' office that reaches a lot of elderly people, says Nathalie Clutot. It offers themed outings, to the Sauvian swimming pool, to the Lunas leisure area or to the sea, in the morning, before the big heat. But also cooled spaces for people who don't have one. We are able to accommodate them at the seniors' office, in our two restaurant clubs or at the CCAS."

Although, in the South, people are more used to high temperatures, "we are a little more used to withstanding these temperatures than in the North for example. Over there, the heatwave plan is not activated in the same way. Here, it is only declared after three days when the temperature has exceeded 23° at night. In the North, where they do not have the same resistance to heat, it is from 21°”, she specifies.
