The City of Béziers paid tribute, Monday, September 2, to Jean Farret, the former chief of staff of Mayor Raymond Couderc, assassinated on September 2, 2001 by an Islamist.
The traditional ceremony that has been taking place since then was always organized in the same place, in front of the memorial stele installed on the central reservation of Rhin-et-Danube Avenue, not far from where the Béziers native was killed, the gas station, to be exact.
Speeches, laying of wreaths and Marseillaise
"Béziers was then the scene of the first act of the terrorist tragedy that marks our century, as the mayor, Robert Ménard, recalled in his speech. Just a few days after this tragedy, the world plunged into horror. America was struck by the horrific Islamist attacks of September 11 […]"
The ceremony continued with the various laying of wreaths and the Marseillaise in the presence of various personalities and members of Jean Farret's family.
"Our history, our memory is that of resistance. Resistance to oppression, intolerance, tyranny. To everything that Jean Farret fought against", the mayor said.
