The dinner of correspondents of the White House cancelled

Le dîner des correspondants de la Maison-Blanche annulé

The edition 2020 will not take place: the COVID-19 was because of the dinner of correspondents of the White House, an annual appointment of Washington, which celebrates the freedom of the press.

“We must, regretfully, cancel our dinner scheduled for 29 August,” announced Tuesday, the Association of correspondents of the White House (WHCA).

This gala dinner is an opportunity for the president to give a speech, usually tinged with self-mockery, over the past year, and getting caught by a comedian.

Since his arrival at the White House, Donald Trump, which multiplies the attacks against the journalists, however, has always shunned a meeting, the calling them”boring” and preferring of the meetings of the campaign.

The tradition of the dinner was started in 1921. Since 1980, all the presidents, democrats as republicans, attended, except Ronald Reagan in 1981 who was recovering from an attack in which he had been seriously injured.

It is during this evening, at which he participated as a guest in 2011, Donald Trump had been the target of spades Barack Obama, who had mocked his taste for conspiracy theories.

For years, the real estate tycoon had relayed a theory questioning the place of birth of the first black president in the country’s history and therefore its legitimacy to lead the United States.
