Dr. Phil will leave his eponymous show after 21 seasons. The host has announced that the afternoon talk show that made him famous will end at the end of this 2022-2023 season. 

Phil McGraw, aka Dr. Phil rose to fame following his guest appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the late 90s. He then got his own talk show in 2002: Dr. Phil, created with help from Oprah.

The talk show brought families – with members of all ages – to tackle issues like substance abuse , health, behavioral issues, education, marriage, mental health and interpersonal relationships.

The 72-year-old personality has hosted nearly 4,000 episodes, hosted 20,000 guests and racked up letters from five million viewers over the two decades of his show. It was nominated for 31 Emmy Awards.

In a statement, host Phil McGraw said he was quitting the afternoon schedule and wanted to expand his audience with a new project, because he says he has “serious concerns for the American family”. It will launch in early 2024.

An average of two million people continue to watch episodes of Dr. Phil, which puts the show at the second highest rated talk show after Living with Kelly and Ryan, which is currently in first place, according to Variety.
