Coronavirus : the Euro 2020 football was postponed for a year because of the pandemic

On Tuesday 17 march 2020, UEFA has announced the postponement of the Euro 2020 to next year. It will therefore be necessary to wait another year to see the matches of the football championship european. In fact, it will be held in 2021, as the pandemic of sars coronavirus affects several European countries, including France, which is now in confinement.

The Euro 2020 carried over in 2021

On Monday 16 march 2020, during his speech, the president of the Republic Emmanuel Macron has announced the containment for our country. With France, Spain and Italy affected by the pandemic, the countries of the european Union are likely to be affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19). Suddenly, necessarily, the Euro 2020 seemed wrong party to be held in such unsanitary conditions. The UEFA (Union of european football associations) held a crisis meeting in video-conference on Tuesday 17 march 2020 to make a radical decision.

And as noted by the website of UEFA, the 55 member associations of which the FFF (French football Federation) have decided to postpone the Euro 2020 to next year, i.e. in 2021. This has been unanimously approved by the voters. The Twitter account of the football federation of Norwegian has even indicated the new date : from 11 June to 11 July 2021 (instead of 12 June to 12 July 2020, which were initially planned). The tweet states that “more information are to come”.

It should be noted that the matches were to be played in 12 different european countries, and the first of them was held in Rome, Italy.

The national championships and European Cups suspended

This decision of the UEFA was not the only one in this period of a pandemic of sars coronavirus. Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, and Theodore Theodoridis, the general secretary of the instance, also announced the suspension of European Cups (champions League and Europa League). Not to mention that the main national championships have also been interrupted.

In addition to all these games, frozen, UEFA has announced the creation of two working groups : the first to work on the new calendar and the second to manage the economic consequences of decisions taken.
