“It seems incredible, but the population of dogs that inhabited almost all the territory of America for several thousand years, served as an important part of many native American cultures have disappeared so quickly,” says Lauren Franz, University of London, Queen Mary.

Today only a few dogs have genetic traits of the ancient rocks.

The researchers suggested that their almost complete extinction was the result of not only cultural change, but also the diseases brought by the conquistadors. It is also likely that European colonists prevented the sale and breeding of dogs kept by native Americans.
