The “From farm to farm” weekend in the Gard highlights farmers and agroforestry

La présentation du week-end “De ferme en ferme” avait lieu au domaine du Scamandre, à Vauvert.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April, across the Gard, the weekend "From farm to farm" brings together farmers committed to sustainable development.

"We want to discover the profession of farmer and the know-how of people committed to sustainable agriculture", explains Jocelyne Fort, vice-president of the Civam federation, which organizes the Farm to Farm weekend each year. "This makes it possible to promote local products through short circuits& quot;, continues Bruno Pascal, vice-president of the Departmental Council which supports the event.

700 farms in France

Created 40 years ago in Drôme, the event has existed for 12 years in Gard. This Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28, 66 farms will open their doors in Gard. In France, nearly 700 producers welcome visitors. "This year, the national theme is trees and biodiversity, this allows you to discover agroforestry", continues Jocelyne Strong.

And it was precisely at Scamandre, in Vauvert, that the days were presented, in this wine estate created by the Renouard family and which has been operating according to the principles of agroforestry since 2017 and organic since 2012. In around twenty years, the owners have planted more than 2,000 trees, some in the middle of the vines, and installed beehives or fruit trees. "The interest is to bring back biodiversity, to conserve humidity in the soil, to take advantage of the shade", explains Laurent de Groc, operations manager at Scamandre, who manages the vineyard and the cellar and produces a wine like a goldsmith, with very small yields, harvested manually in 10 kilo boxes for nectars . This weekend, guided tours will allow you to discover this environmentally friendly know-how.

Atypical productions

Around Vauvert, several other farms will open their doors, "sometimes with atypical productions", welcomes Jocelyne Fort. This is particularly the case of André Calba, from Trésor de Camargue, a reed cutter for around fifty years based in Aimargues. It manufactures doormats to cover pergolas or parasols. "An exceptional insulator", according to André Calba. Nurseryman Daniel Thomin produces tillandsia, "a plant that grows in trees in South America and we grow it in Cailar."

Not far away, at Saveurs de Bourgarel in Gallician, Elena Boulay and Pierre Galand, coming from the restaurant business, have converted into a farm inn. "We cook what we grow", explains Elena, who also produces vegetables, citrus fruits, spices and nuts allowing make delicate chocolates. All weekend, they show people around their gardens.

The presentation was also an opportunity to discover the products of the Floutier family in Uchaud. Sébastien and Katia produce honey with 700 transhumant hives, between Occitanie and the Jura. Camille and Alexandre raise goats and pigs, produce cheeses, dairy products, olive oils, drinks…hell. Saturday and Sunday, they offer tours, workshops for children and meals with farm products. Even the fries accompanying the grilled meats will be made with potatoes grown on site!
