April 8, NASA satellite Landsat 8 captured the fire and smoke plumes surrounded by white ice and lakes in the Magadan region. The fire raged to the East of the village of Evensk. According to the Federal forestry Agency, on April 8-10, it was the largest forest fire in Russia: its area exceeds 4 hectares.
The cause of the fire is unknown. On the one hand, in this region, “season” begins in April or may when the farmers burn old crops to clear the fields. But the maps show that this area consists mainly of shrubs, not arable land.
The fire was not conducted: it seemed that the spread of fire prevent the natural water and snow barriers, and threats to human settlements there. In such cases, the special Commission on prevention and liquidation of emergency situations and ensuring fire safety make a decision on inexpediency of fire fighting: projected costs exceed the projected harm.
However, by 13 April the flames had reached more than 7 thousand hectares, and the landing of Avialesookhrana landed in Severo-Evensk district. To localize the fire the experts are: fire is carried by a strong wind, but the water sources have not thawed out. It is impossible to send and helicopters: the distance is too great, and on the way back may not be enough fuel. The task of the troops is the protection of the nearby towns.
