The maternity hospital sent her home to Mandagout, she waited in the parking lot and gave birth three hours later.
Born at 4am on 19th September, Romy gave her parents and the medical staff some emotions before showing the tip of her nose.
Now living more than an hour from the first maternity hospital since the closure of the Ganges maternity hospital, women in labour in the Cévennes must be extra vigilant to sense the right moment to
leave for the hospital. Before the hour is not the hour but after the hour, it can be a problem.
This is precisely the situation that little Romy's parents and the medical team had to face. “Pauline had contractions since mid-August so she was closely monitored by her midwife”, says the father. “On Tuesday at 5 pm, following regular contractions every 10 minutes, we decided to go to the maternity ward. The time to wait for the grandmother to arrive to take care of our two children and we took the road to the Arnaud-de-Villeneuve maternity ward in Montpellier”.
At 7 pm, the mother was admitted to the pre-delivery room. "I wanted to give birth with an epidural but neither of the two anesthesiologists were available to prepare me." Placed under surveillance still with regular contractions but an insufficiently open cervix, at 11 p.m. the head doctor decided to send the young couple home.
"We were very disappointed'"
“We were very surprised by this decision, as were some of the staff. But convinced that Romy's arrival was imminent, we decided to find a hotel room near the maternity ward. At one in the morning, exhausted, we stopped our fruitless search and decided to wait in our car just in front of the entrance.”
At 3 a.m. Pauline was admitted to the pre-delivery room and gave birth without an epidural at 4 a.m. to little Romy Pencolé in perfect health.
“We had experienced the quality of service at the Ganges maternity ward for our first two children. Warm welcome, nice rooms, beds for dads", the young couple tells us. "It goes without saying that we were very disappointed with this latest support".
The parents' experience may have avoided a birth in a car or, at best, in the fire brigade ambulance.
