“The most exciting period” which begins for Patrice Canayer and Montpellier Handball
|« C’est maintenant que le plus dur commence », assure Patrice Canayer le manager du MHB. Midi Libre – SYLVIE CAMBON
Before receiving Celje, this Wednesday February 14 (8:45 p.m.) on behalf of the 11th day of the Champions League, Patrice Canayer, the manager of Montpellier, takes stock of the season.
Is this match against Celje the most important at the start of the year ?
The Coupe de France and championship matches were important. This one is extremely important because it can allow us to ensure qualification for the Champions League. Afterwards, we will have three matches left to try to place ourselves well. There, it’s important to win.
What assessment do you draw from your journey in the Champions League so far ?
In a difficult group like ours, when you play a match to qualify with four days to go, it's not bad. The objective was clear, to qualify by doing well in all three competitions (Coupe de France, Champions League, Starligue). We always remembered what happened two years ago when we were first in our group in the Champions League and 8th in the championship. We didn't want to relive it. We had to balance our forces. The players were more diligent and concentrated in the championship which allowed us not to be in difficulty and to offer ourselves a very exciting second game.
It’s at this level that the group was able to evolve ?
Yes, it has evolved in quality because the recruitment was done accordingly, and the players present have also progressed, in the game and in maturity, and have toughened up.
You have not been spared from injuries, what is the state of the group ?
There are everyday injuries, inherent to our sport, which come back, twisted fingers, small sprains… But when there are long-term injuries it adds up. We recovered Stas Skube who was very professional during his injury. In January he was very involved with young people.
How do you judge the group since the revival ?
We'll wait a bit, but for now I'm satisfied. The dynamics are good. We have to see over time. Now is when the hard part begins. But this is the most exciting time.
These are also your last months at the head of this team, how are you experiencing it ?
I don’t think about it. I come to training every day with pleasure. I enjoy every practice and every match.
