National Director of Public Health will provide an update on COVID-19 tomorrow

Quebec's Acting National Director of Public Health, Drr Luc Boileau, will hold his first separate government press briefing at 3 p.m. , Thursday, to provide an update on the pandemic in the province.

Accompanied by the interim President and CEO of the National Institute of Excellence in Health and Social Services (INESSS), Michèle de Guise, and the Senior Strategic Medical Advisor of the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS), Marie-France Raynault, Dr. Boileau will provide an update on the latest COVID data.

Tuesday, Mr. Boileau announced his intention to hold separate press briefings from those of the government. It thus responded to a request from opposition parties who believe that this will help guarantee the impartiality of public health recommendations vis-à-vis government decisions.

His predecessor, Dr. Horacio Arruda, usually held his press briefings alongside Prime Minister François Legault or CAQ ministers, which had led observers to criticize his lack of independence. Dr. Arruda had, however, also held separate press briefings, without a CAQ decision-maker at his side.

François Legault, for his part, argued on Tuesday that there are advantages and disadvantages at joint and separate press briefings.

Recall that Quebec had 3,270 patients in its hospitals on Wednesday, including 252 patients in intensive care.
