The bosses of the construction industry were three times more likely this year to agree with their workers to keep their building open during the holiday period.
“For the months of may and June, the Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) has received nearly three times more of the opinion that for the same period last year, 180 in 2020, compared to 64 in 2019,” said his spokesman, Pascal Gingras.
Agreements with employees
For works during the construction holiday, an agreement must be reached between the workers of a shipyard and the employer. The CCQ and the union shall then be notified of the agreement.
This summer, nearly 170 000 cheques of vacation totaling $ 492 million $ have been handed over to the construction workers on leave from the 19th of July last.
With the pandemic, some have agreed to roll up their sleeves to advance the work, which had been delayed due to the health crisis.
Even if the CCQ cannot quantify the number of workers who remain on the building during the vacation of the construction, it is expected that several of them continue to work during the summer.
“Considering the increase in the number of opinions received by the employers informing us that an agreement has been reached with their workers in order to continue some work during the construction holiday, we anticipate that there will be more building activity this year,” said Pascal Gingras.
Closing the gap
According to him, this is due to the abrupt stoppage of construction sites this spring during the crisis, which has caused many delays in several places.
“It is important to mention that the inspectors of the Commission de la construction du Québec will continue to travel through the building during the next two weeks to ensure their compliance,” assured the spokesman of the organization, Pascal Gingras.
