and QMI Agency MISE & Agrave; DAY

A shortage of psychiatrists causes significant delays in psychiatric evaluations which increases delays in court.

Wednesday at the Alma courthouse, the case by Jean-Léon Pinette-Hervieux has been postponed to March 30. In September, the individual pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter and two more of assault with a weapon. He was to undergo an assessment over the next 60 days to determine whether or not he would be declared an offender, long-term or dangerous offender. The shortage of psychiatrists made this expertise impossible. Even no doctor has been assigned to his file. His case has therefore not progressed in three months.

Numerous extension requests

This is not a unique case. Requests for psychiatric reports have increased at the Pinel Institute in recent months. For assessments whose report is due in court in May, time extension requests have already been made. Defense prosecutors with more than 35 years of practice have never seen a similar situation. they were not sentenced and until they became detainees.
