The Auchan supermarket in Val-de-Reuil in Eure has been asking its customers since July to provide proof of identity in order to borrow one.

For several years, the Auchan store in Val-de-Reuil, in Eure, has been facing numerous trolley thefts. To remedy this, since July 2024, trolleys are no longer self-service in the car park. Customers must now go to the store reception to obtain one in exchange for their identity card, which they collect after returning the trolley, reports France Bleu Normandie.

This measure aims to counter "the significant disappearance" of trolleys. Some days, there are no trolleys available for customers.“We bought 600 carts last year and I don't have any left. I had 150 returned from another store at the beginning of the year and I don't have any left again,” explains Laurine Dauget, the director to our colleagues.

Abandoned carts in the city

The residents of Val-de-Reuil have spotted abandoned carts in the city, on the side of the roads or even in the river. “While walking the dog, my husband sees loads of them over there. They hang around everywhere in the city, people do whatever they want“, laments Nicole, a resident of the town.

These carts are sometimes used “as barbecues or are damaged by young people”, admits the director. While some customers bring their carts back after carrying their shopping home, many do not.

Despite purchasing second-hand carts, the cost remains high for the company, between 80 and 130 euros per cart. This new procedure, although effective, has surprised some customers, especially elderly people like Josiane and Lydie.“It's tiring to go back and forth between the store and the car. The problem is that everyone is penalized, even those who respect the rules! “, they regret.
