The SPVQ obtains the right to intervene in a situation of active shooter

Le SPVQ obtient le droit d'intervenir en situation de tireur actif

Ten years after the creation of his own Group tactical intervention (GTI), the Service de police de la Ville de Québec (SPVQ) will now be able to direct its own interventions in situations of hostage or active shooter.

Previously, police officers in Quebec have been required to be relayed by the tactical squad of the Sûreté du Québec during such situations.

Now, the IMT of the SPVQ will have all the latitude required to direct its operations.

It is a request that had been formulated officially in 2016 by the City of Québec.

Exemptions from the regulations

The minister of public Safety, Genevieve Guilbault, has recently agreed to a derogation from the regulation on the level of police services otherwise provided that only the Sûreté du Québec and the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal could lead a response to such events.

The battle group of the SPVQ may be required to work occasionally outside of its territory, if the Sûreté du Québec’s request for reasons of availability or time.
