The slowdown in activities in the operating theatres of the eastern Townships because of the COVID-19 has swollen the waiting list for elective surgeries in the institutions of the CIUSSS of the eastern Townships-CHUS.
Even before the pandemic, approximately 8,000 patients were waiting for surgery, due to a lack of operating rooms and nursing qualified.
However, in June, there were more than 11 100 people waiting for surgery, a number powered by the postponement of surgeries to deal with the pandemic. Since then, this number has since decreased to approximately 10 800 patients.
These numbers are probably under-estimated because at the height of the pandemic, the specialist doctors are not seeing new patients.
If the objective of the CIUSSS is once again functional to 100 % in September, the wait times reduction will require, however, a lot of time.
25% in mid-march, the volume of surgical activity was 50% in may and now stands at about 80% of the usual number of surgeries.
Fortunately, the cancer services have been maintained at more than 80% of their capacity, which has allowed us to limit the delays in the delivery of treatment.
More than 1,500 surgeries have been postponed because of a health emergency. The schedule of their time is planned according to the clinical priorities related to conditions of patients.
