On Tuesday, August 27, the 17-year-old paid small sums with counterfeit 50-euro bills in several shops in the shopping center, before a salesperson reported him. He was arrested by the police, who are calling for vigilance.
Repeated in several stores in the Polygone, in Montpellier, the counterfeit money scam of this 17-year-old was finally detected. On Tuesday, August 27, a salesperson alerted the security guards of the shopping center, indicating that the suspect had tried to pay for a small purchase using a counterfeit 50 euro note.
Three counterfeit notes passed
The security guards went to meet him and alerted the national police. She discovered that the young man had sold fake notes in three stores, before being refused in a fourth. Each time, the teenager paid sums of less than 5 euros in order to get as much change as possible.
Arrested and taken into custody at the police station, the young man, originally from the Paris region, denied any dishonest intentions and explained that the five fake 50 euro notes he was in possession of (imitations that were easy to spot) had been given to him by a friend to help him out.
Shopkeepers urged to be vigilant
Previously unknown to the police, he was handed over to the emergency unit of the Childhood home, before returning to his home region. The national police are calling on traders to be vigilant about counterfeit money.
