The municipality has opted for a new wastewater reuse system to limit waste of the precious resource.

A successful bet for Barjac. The town of 1,600 inhabitants has managed to save 3,000 m3 of drinking water this year, 2023. The equivalent of an Olympic swimming pool. "I was warned, at the start of my mandate in 2020, that drinking water was being used to improve the treatment of sludge systems, which' “We politely call the shit we generate,” recalls Robin Furester, municipal councilor responsible for the environment and sanitation. "We therefore thought about a system that would allow us to optimize the operation of our wastewater treatment plant, by replacing this drinking water with treated reused water from the station", explains the" ;#39;elected.

To develop this dual-use system, no infrastructure was added to the already existing station. "We have invested in our station, a project that has become possible since we are under public management and not under delegation. The investment for this operation is limited. It comes to less than €20,000, which can be amortized in five years, if we include subsidies, such as those from the water agency, specifies Robin Furestier, which encourages other municipalities to follow the approach, "absolutely necessary" during the summer in particular. The town was even placed in a water resource crisis during the hot months.
